Home / Activities / Parks on the Air / Buford Trout Hatchery
My family and I have visited the Buford Trout Hatchery many times when the kids were young and did some fishing in a small pond that used to be back through the trees shown in this shot.
This was my second attempt and I was finally successful getting the 10 contacts needed to activate the park.
My POTA Setup
17' Whip Antenna & Radials Attached Tripod
My antenna for this trip was the POTA Performer antenna I learned about watching this video by Michael (KB9VBR) about this excellent antenna originally designed by Greg C Mihran (KJ6ER). Go check out his page and the incredible documentation that he has prepared.
This is a really simple antenna to build using a 17' stainless steel whip and 2 elevated radials at 90 degrees apart. Even though I could tune my Xiegu G90 to a rusty tractor and get on the air, I did not need the ATU today. This antenna is perfectly resonant with a 1:1 SWR on 20/17/15/12/10/6 meters.
I am using a small piece of insulating plastic where the antenna mount meets the aluminum extension on the tripod to limit contact to the metal. I also used twine attached at the top of the antenna with markings so I can raise and lower the antenna for the appropriate frequency.
For more on how you use this on different bands, check out Greg's documentation to learn more and give it try!
