Parks on the Air (POTA) is a popular amateur radio program that combines outdoor exploration with the excitement of ham radio communications. Launched in 2017, POTA encourages licensed amateur radio operators to set up portable stations in parks and protected areas, making contacts with other radio enthusiasts worldwide.
POTA participants fall into two main categories:
Activators: These are operators who travel to parks, set up temporary stations, and make radio contacts. To successfully "activate" a park, an operator must make at least 10 contacts within a single UTC day.
Hunters: Also known as chasers, these are operators who attempt to contact activators in various parks. Hunters can participate from their home stations or while mobile.
I battled record breaking pollen count and setup my brand new POTA PERformer antenna at Park US-7860 Buford Trout Hatchery and successfully activated my first park! Thank you to all the stations who patiently answered my call and even played my silly add-on Q&A game where I asked...
"What was the first concert you ever attended?"
If you are looking for a state park to activate, here is a list of all the parks in Georgia that are participating in POTA. Just make sure that you have reviewed the activator guide before you go. You might also brush up on the rules so you can stay safe and have fun!
